The Talk Story Film Festival
View the "2009 Festival At A Glance" (4 Day Schedule)
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL May 14 – 17, 2009 marks the fourth year of Big Island Film Festival at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. This “Talk Story” film festival is a celebration of independent narrative filmmakers and their short and feature films. New venues last year were an exciting addition to this growing event. As development continues in this resort area, we are pleased to be allowed to include many locations adjacent to each other that include free parking and other great values. The daytime and Ohana film events will take place in The Studio at Queens’ Marketplace, and social events will be around the resort. The Festival movie venue will remain at the beautiful Waikoloa Bowl at Queens’ Gardens. Our focus remains on independent narrative filmmakers and only independent narrative films will be eligible for Golden Honu Awards. We have opened a few time slots for narrative movies with distribution in order to bring in recognizable filmmakers and actors, whose insights can be valuable for the independent narrative filmmakers. Our 2008 attendance, a wonderful mixture of visitors and residents, continued to increase over 2006 & 2007 and we were able to secure some exciting sponsors who contributed to making 2008 Big Island Film Festival a success. Our selection by MovieMaker Magazine in 2007 as one of “Twenty Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" has increased the quality and quantity of films from which to select the very best for our audience. So, the celebration
of narrative filmmaking continues with an international array of narrative
features and shorts, Actor and Filmmaker Salutes, the Awards Brunch and
Best of the Fest. Best of the Fest is very special this year with a Concert
by MAKANA and Audience Choice Feature and Short films as well as an opportunity
to commemorate Hawaii’s 50th Anniversary of Statehood. 2009 will
bring a special one-day training on Saturday for those with a story in
mind who are ready to learn to write a screenplay. Movies, special events,
Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian music, wrapped into the Spirit of Aloha makes
our Talk Story film festival something which we’re pleased to watch
grow into a premiere event on the beautiful Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island. |

The Honu Venue presents two-hour blocks of narrative features and/or shorts during the day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Ohana Venue will show two family features and at least two family shorts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting at 7:00 p.m. This venue will move indoors this year since it got a little cool last year for some of our little ones and kupuna. The Festival Venue will show two features and at least two shorts, which might be up to R ratings, outdoors on Thursday, Friday and Saturday starting at 7:00 PM at the Waikoloa Bowl at Queens’ Gardens, next door to Queens’ MarketPlace. This will also be the site of the Best of the Fest Concert and showing of Audience Choice Feature film and short. The Best of the Fest Concert starts Sunday at 5 PM, with the door opening at 4. Big Island entertainer Rob Yamanoha will honor us with his music while we settle in for the evening. The Audience Choice Films at 7:30 PM are a part of the Best of the Fest ticket. A silent auction raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project will also be held at The Studio Lanai at Queens’ MarketPlace. A donation from each Best of the Fest ticket sold will be donated to Hawaii Island Food Basket. Active duty military
